The fragrance of some incense stick kept at one corner of a room spreads all over the room in some time due to the phenomenon of diffusion.

Diffusion is the process of movement of molecules from a region of high concentration to a region of low concentration. It is a passive process. Diffusion results in the development of diffusion pressure (D.P) which is directly proportional to the number of diffusing particles.

Factors on which diffusion depend are

Temperature - High temperature increase the movement of molecules, so the rate of diffusion is increased. Whereas low temperature decreases the movement of molecules, so the rate of diffusion is decreased.

Concentration gradient - Greater is the difference in a concentration gradient, more will be the rate of diffusion and vice versa.

Membrane permeability- More is the permeability of cell membrane more will be the rate of diffusion, and membrane with lower permeability decrease the rate of diffusion.

So diffusion is a slow and passive process because this process does not require ATP molecule for movement.
