List the structural features that prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells have in common. Briefly explain why each of the structures that have listed is essential.

Prokaryotic cells are present in bacteria, cyanobacteria, mycoplasma, etc. It lacks a true nucleus. Both prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells possess certain structures in common. All cells have cytoplasm, plasma membrane, ribosomes and DNA. Like plant cells, the prokaryotic cells possess a cell wall outer to the cell membrane.

The main function of the cell wall is to give shape and protection to the cell. It prevents the cell from bursting when water enters the cell by osmosis.

The plasma membrane also called the cell membrane, is the lipoproteinaceous layer that surrounds the cell and protects it from the outside environment.

Ribosomes are the non-membrane bound organelles in which protein synthesis takes place. 70s ribosomes are present in prokaryotes but it is 80s in eukaryotes.

The cytoplasm includes all the contents of the cell inside the cell membrane that consists of cell organelles.

DNA is present in both prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells which are the genetic material of the cell. Genes are located in it. In prokaryotic cells, DNA is circular and found in the region of the cytoplasm called a nucleoid.
