Compare the two diagrams given below. Name the structures in a plant cell that can be seen with the electron microscope but not with the light microscope.

The resolution power of the light microscope is much lower than an electron microscope. Hence, the smaller sized structures are not observed under this. The structures such as the nucleus, cytoplasm, Golgi bodies, cell wall and cell membrane are seen under the light microscope. Mitochondria and chloroplast are also visible but their parts are invisible. In chloroplast, grana are just visible under the light microscope, but in an electron microscope, the stacked thylakoids (grana) and stroma lamellae are visible. In mitochondria, cristae are visible only in the electron microscope. The electron microscope has high magnification, hence, ribosomes and endoplasmic reticulum, and are observed by using this. Rough and smooth endoplasmic reticulum can be differentiated through the electron microscope. Double layered nuclear membrane, nuclear pores and microtubules are also seen under this.
