Diffusion is obvious in gases and liquids, but diffusion in solids is more likely rather than of solids. This process does not require a semipermeable membrane. Diffusion is insufficient to meet the oxygen requirements of large multicellular organisms like humans since the volume of human body is so big that oxygen cannot diffuse into all the cells quickly. This is because, in multicellular organisms, all the cells may not be in direct contact with the surrounding environment.

Also, oxygen will have to travel long distances inside the human body from our lungs to each and every cell. It is transported with the help of haemoglobin of the red blood cells. Diffusion is a very slow process. Hence, a more sophisticated method other than simple diffusion is required to meet the oxygen demand.
