Classify and describe epithelial tissue on the basis of structural modifications of cells.

The epithelium is the simple animal tissue, present as cover for internal and external organs and acts a body's first line of protection from physical, chemical, and biological wear and tear. Epithelial tissues are classified into three types based on structural modifications of cells, namely squamous, cuboidal and columnar.

Squamous Epithelium: This type of epithelial tissue is made of a single thin layer of flattened cells and has irregular boundaries. This type of epithelium is found in the walls of blood vessels and air sacs in the lungs; thin layer makes a facilitates diffusion of substances.

Cuboidal Epithelium: This type of epithelial tissue is composed of a single layer of cuboidal cells and present in the ducts of glands and the nephron. It's the primary function of secretion and absorption.

Ciliated Epithelium: The cilia are present on the cuboidal or columnar epithelium; they are called the ciliated epithelium. The primary function is the movement of substances and present in bronchioles and fallopian tubes.

Glandular Epithelium: The cuboidal or columnar epithelium assumes the specialised function of secretion is called the glandular epithelium and found in exocrine and endocrine glands.
