While writing in class, your pen stops working. How will you proceed scientifically to find out why this has happened? List all possible reasons (hypothesis) you can think of and state how you will proceed to verify or disprove each one.

Science is a system of acquiring and organising knowledge. The scientific method adopts five steps to seek explanations for every problem. The scientific method is illustrated below with the example.

Step 1 (Identifying a problem): While writing in class, if our pen stops working, we can notice the change. Here, the problem is with our pen as it stops working.

Step 2 (Observation and gathering information): We can observe that there is no pen mark producing on the paper. The ball at the end point of the pen refill is rotating fine but we can not write even a single letter with the pen.

Step 3 (Possible explanation): From our gathered information and observation we can lead to the possible explanation that the pen is run out of ink.

Step 4 (Experimental verification): Now we remove the refill from the pen and observe it in light. We can see the level of ink inside the refill is very much lower.

Step 5 (Reaching a definite conclusion): As the level of ink in the refill shows very low, we can take our possible explanation was correct and reaches a conclusion that the pen is run out of ink.
