Lightning conductors are used to attract lightning to a conductor that allows the lightning to discharge safely into the ground. The lightning conductor uses a thick copper wire or strip that connects the building's tallest point to a long copper earth pole hammered deep into the ground on the building's side. It protects structures from lightning strikes by allowing the current to flow more easily to the ground in a separate path rather than through the structure. The current in the conductor may be so high in the event of a direct lightning strike that it may melt the metal, but the damage to the building will be minimal.

On its way to Earth, lightning seeks out the finest conductor and, as a result, will leap from side to side in search of a tree or a building. Because it is attracted to point objects rather than round or blunt ones, lightning rods are designed with sharp points. When an electric cloud passes over the rods, the power flows down until the cloud is discharged completely. There is no flash or sound of thunder throughout this process. The top of the lightning rods are silver-coated to prevent rust.
