Before independence, the industrial sector of India was not so developed. Major industries that were set up before the independence are :

The Iron & Steel Industry was first set up in 1874 in Kulti which is still working.

The Aluminium Industry-first set up in West Bengal in 1837.

The cement Industry was first set up in Chennai in 1904.

In India, the beginning of the chemical fertilizer industry was with the establishment of the Super Phosphate plant in Ranipet (Tamil Nadu) in 1906. Shipping Industry was first set up in Vishakhapatnam in 1941.

Agro-based industries set up before independence were:

Paper Industry was first set up in Serampore, West Bengal which was not so successful. After that, it was set up in Lucknow. Again a paper mill was set up in West Bengal in 1881 which is still working.

Cotton Textile Industry developed with the establishment of the first cotton mill which was first established in Fort Gloster and was unsuccessful. In 1854, the first successful cotton mill was set up in Mumbai.

Jute Industry was first set up in Rishra, near Kolkata in 1855. Woollen Textile Industry was first set up in Kanpur in 1876.
