Ethane is an alkane with the general formula $C_{n} H_{2 n + 2}$ and ethene is an alkene with the general formula $C_{n} H_{2 n}$ . The relative molecular mass is equal to the sum of the relative atomic masses of all the atoms that comprise a molecule. Bromine water becomes colourless when it is shaken with an alkene. Bromine water is an orange/brown solution of bromine. Alkenes can decolourise bromine water, but alkanes cannot so the colour remains the same. It is a test for unsaturated compounds.
