Food and water are the two main substances required for the survival of living beings. The plants are autotrophic and can prepare their food by the process of photosynthesis. Water is one of the essential components used as a raw material for the synthesis of food.

The roots are the non-green underground part of the plant. The microscopic, epidermal outgrowth of the root called the root hairs. The root hairs remain in direct contact with the film of water present between the soil particles. The root hairs absorb the water and minerals from the soil by the process of osmosis. The water absorbed is further transported to the epidermal cells of the root, then to the cortex due to the difference in the concentration gradient and finally reaches the root xylem and then transported to the stem and leaves through water-conducting tissue called xylem.

From the above explanation, it can be concluded that root hairs, xylem, and roots all together related to a common function "absorption and conduction of water". The phloem is a complex tissue that transports the food prepared by the leaves to the stem, roots, and other parts of the plants.
