Vibrations or shaking of a portion of the earth's surface, caused by sudden movements beneath the crust is known as an earthquake. The focus of an earthquake is the place of its origin, while the epicentre is the location directly above the focus on the surface of the earth.

The strength of an earthquake is measured using an instrument called the seismograph. This strength is expressed using a Richter scale. Note: An earthquake can be weak or strong. Weaker earthquakes, called aftershocks, often follow a strong earthquake.
