Most green plants prepare their own food by the process of photosynthesis. Even though submerged water plants look different from terrestrial plants, they also undergo photosynthesis. There are some special adaptations in submerged water plants that help them to perform photosynthesis. Underwater plants do not have stomata and therefore, these plants have thin and edgy leaves surrounded by thin porous cuticles through which dissolved carbon dioxide present in the water enter into plants through diffusion. Even though the submerged plants are underwater, they still get energy from the sun because sunlight can pass through water. So, we can conclude that submerged water plants use dissolved carbon dioxide and water in the presence of sunlight and pigment chlorophyll to yield the by-products like glucose and oxygen gas.
