Slick tyres (or generally slicks) are the rubber tyres with a smooth treading all along. Slick tyres provide more traction compared to grooved tyres on dry roads, due to their greater contact area.

In some machines, it may not be advisable to use oil, etc., as lubricant. In such machines, an air cushion between the moving parts is used to reduce friction. A vehicle or craft which travels over land or water on a cushion of air provided by a downward blast, is called a hovercraft. The frictional drag from the sea on a hovercraft is reduced by a cushion of compressed air.

Viscosity is the resistance to the flow of a fluid. Viscosity offers opposition to the flow of liquids. and describes the internal friction of a fluid that is moving. The reciprocal of viscosity is known as fluidity, and measures how easily a liquid flows. For example honey, has a greater viscosity than water.

Tribology is the science and engineering of interacting surfaces in relative motion. It includes the study and application of the principles of friction, lubrication and wear.
