Let the marked price of an article be $₹ 100$ .

First discount of $25 % = 100 \times \frac{25}{100} = ₹ 25$

Selling price $=$ Cost price $-$ Discount

Price after first discount $= ₹ 100 - ₹ 25 = ₹ 75$

Second discount of $20 % = 75 \times \frac{20}{100} = ₹ 15$

Price after second discount $= ₹ 75 - ₹ 15 = ₹ 60$

$∴$ Net selling price $= ₹ 60$

Therefore, single discount is equal to the difference of the marked price and the price after two successive discounts.

Discount $= ₹ 40$

Discount percentage $= \frac{₹ 40}{₹ 100} \times 100 = 40 %$

Hence, the single discount percentage is equal to $40 %$ .
