Bacteria are prokaryotic microscopic organisms that are devoid of well-organised nuclei. According to the mode of respiration, they are of two types bacteria can be aerobic and anaerobic.

The aerobic bacteria are those which respires in the presence of oxygen. In other words, we can say that aerobic bacteria undergo cellular respiration by utilising oxygen. This results in the complete breakdown (oxidation) of food to provide energy for the living activities. Whereas anaerobic respiration takes place in the absence of oxygen. The aerobic respiration can be summed up in the below mentioned equation:

$C_{6} H_{12} O_{6} + 6 O_{2} \to$ $6 {CO}_{2} + 6 H_{2} O + Energy (ATP)$

Bacteria that compulsorily require oxygen for respiration are called obligate bacteria. The bacteria which can switch to anaerobic respiration are called facultative bacteria. Some examples of aerobic bacteria include Bacillus anthrax, Mycobacterium tuberculosis, Lactobacillus, Azotobacter.
