Automobiles produce smoke due to the burning of fuels (for example, petrol, diesel etc). The incomplete burning of these fuels releases particulate matter such as carbon monoxide (CO), hydrocarbons (HCs), sulphur dioxide (SO₂) and nitrogen oxides (NOx). These particles are small enough to remain suspended in the air.
The carbon monoxide released from the burning of fuels has the affinity to combine with the oxygen. During breathing, the carbon monoxide enters the body and combines with haemoglobin and forms carboxyhemoglobin. This reduces the oxygen-carrying capacity of the haemoglobin. The body cells do not get an adequate amount of oxygen. This causes allergic reactions in the body cells and the person starts coughing. It also causes suffocation and may even become the cause of death.
