The term living represents something that has life. There are salient features that separate these organisms from the nonliving ones. There are many characteristics of living organisms including growth, reproduction, locomotion, metabolism, consciousness, sensing ability.

Growth is a characteristic feature of living organisms. In plants, the growth occurs by cell division throughout the lifespan. In animals, the growth can be observed to a certain point in time.

Reproduction can be best defined as a process by which the organisms give rise to new and similar organisms. Mainly two types of reproduction can be observed. These are sexual and asexual reproduction.

Metabolism can be characterized as a process that represents the sum of all biochemical reactions that take place in the body of an organism. It has two parts. These are catabolism and anabolism. The complex molecules get broken into smaller and simple molecules by the process of cannibalism. The complex molecules are formed from the simple molecules through the process of anabolism.

The sensing ability is the unique feature of living organisms. It is a distinctive feature of living organisms. All living organisms can sense their surroundings. The living organisms can sense the change in the external environment and adapt to that condition.
