Steps of construction:

Draw any ray $OA$ .

Place the pointer of the compasses at $O$ . With $O$ as centre and any convenient radius draw an arc cutting $OA$ at $M$ .

With $M$ as centre and without altering the radius (as in step 2) draw an arc which cuts the first arc at $P$ .

With $P$ as centre and without altering the radius (as in step 2) draw an arc which cuts the first arc at $Q$ .

With $P$ as centre and any radius slightly more than half of $PQ$ , draw an arc in the interior of angle $POQ$ .

With $Q$ as centre and without altering the radius (as in previous step) draw an arc which intersects previous arc at $Y$ .

With $Y$ as centre and any radius slightly more than half of $AY$ , draw an arc in the interior of angle $AOY$ .

With $A$ as centre and without altering the radius (as in previous step) draw an arc which intersects previous arc at $Z$ .

Draw ray $OZ$ , then $∠ AOZ = 45 °$ is the required angle.
