Given below are three types of triangles. Do all the triangles have the same number of lines of symmetry? Which triangle has more?

The imaginary line which divides a figure into two identical parts is called the line of symmetry or axis of symmetry (shown by a dotted line). The two parts of the figure coincide with each other when they are folded along the line of symmetry. An object can have one or more than one lines of symmetry or axes of symmetry.

As evident from the figure, this is a scalene triangle since all sides of the triangle are unequal. Thus, it is not possible to divide a scalene triangle into two identical parts as shown above. So, there is no line of symmetry for a scalene triangle.

As evident from the figure, this is an isosceles triangle since two sides of the triangle are equal. Thus, it is possible to divide an isosceles triangle into two identical parts as shown above. So, there is one line of symmetry for an isosceles triangle.

As evident from the figure, this is an equilateral triangle since all sides and all angles of the triangle are equal. Thus, it is possible to divide an equilateral triangle into two identical parts as shown above. So, there are three lines of symmetry for an equilateral triangle.

Thus, all the triangles do not have the same number of lines of symmetry and the equilateral triangle has more lines of symmetry.
