In Harappan towns, residential houses were made of baked bricks. They had a courtyard, kitchen, and several rooms. The drainage system of houses was well planned, and often the houses were two or three-storied. Houses had more doors and less number of windows to maintain privacy.

Early humans lived in pit houses. These were primitive. Generally, the hole was dug on the ground and used as pit houses. Their base was wide, and the entrance was narrow. They did not have many rooms or separate kitchens. Ash, charcoal, and pottery were found in these pit houses which proved that they were used for cooking. Generally, during extreme weather conditions, early humans lived in these houses.
