The Prayaga Prashasti:

The Prayaga Prashasti is an inscription engraved on the Ashoka Pillar. It is a 33-line eulogy. Harisena, was the court poet of Samudragupta who composed Prayaga Prashasti. Prashasti is a Sanskrit word which means ‘in praise of’. The Prayaga Prashasti also tells us about the campaigns of Samudragupta in different parts of India.

Some of the information about the campaigns of Samudragupta are mentioned below:

The twelve rulers of Dakshinapatha were defeated by Samudragupta. He showed favour to these kings and allowed them to rule again over their territories after being defeated.

It was mentioned that Samudragupta defeated the Pallava King, Vishnugopa.

Samudragupta defeated nine rulers of Aryavartha. He annexed all their territories and integrated them into the Gupta Empire. He called it as ‘Digvijay’.

It shows that tributes were paid to Samudragupta from the frontier kingdoms like Kamarupa, Nepala, Samatata and few of the republican states.

The foreign rulers of Northwestern India such as Sakas chief, later Kushanas submitted to him and offered daughters in marriage.
