Genetically engineered organisms or products means they are developed by recombinant DNA technology. In this method, a desirable gene (gene of interest) can be inserted into an organism with or without the help of a vector. The DNA fragment used in this technique is known as a transgene and the animals and plants which express a modified foreign gene are known as transgenic organisms. The examples of genetically engineered products are as follows:

Human insulin is the product of genetic engineering. The human gene is produced from genetically engineered E coli. By using recombinant DNA technology, insulin-producing genes from human beings have been transferred into E coli bacteria, which produced insulin called 'humulin' for clinical use.

Genetic engineering helps to produce monoclonal antibodies that are antibodies produced by a single clone of cells or cell line. It is made in laboratory that binds to only one substance, including cancer cells.

The GM crop was developed for its nutritional value by using the soil bacterium, Erwinia is Golden rice. It is yellow coloured, due to the expression of DNA for beta-carotene integrated within its genome. This is a precursor of vitamin A.
