The Metre gauge lines were made to reduce the cost. All metre gauge lines except the Nilgiri Mountain Railway, which is a legacy, run on a metre gauge in India, and will be converted into broad gauge under project Unigauge.
Broad gauge is called wide gauge or large line. The distance between the two rails in these railway tracks is $1676$ mm. It would not be wrong to say that any gauge, wider than standard gauge or $1435$ mm, is called broad gauge. The first railway line built in India was a broad gauge line from Bore Bunder (now Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus) to Thane in $1853$ . Broad gauge railway is also used on ports for cranes, etc. This gives better stability, and they are better than thinner gauges.

Project Unigauge, started on $1$ April $1990$ , is an ongoing effort by the Indian Railways to convert and unify all rail gauges in India to a $1676$ mm ( $5$ ft $6$ in) broad gauge. The unigauge system will be highly beneficial to rail users and the railway administration. Shortening of the routes with many re-gauged links will take place.
