Nationalism has been a factor in the breaking down of larger territories into more defined nation states. Nationalist struggles have always contributed to dividing and redividing the state boundaries and borders. Presently, the world is divided into different nation-states and the separatist struggles within existing boundaries are still going on. The process of re-ordering the states has not come to an end.

Nationalism has passed several passes. For example, It led to the unification of small kingdoms into larger nation-states in the country of Europe. Germany and Italy were also formed after a long struggle and process of unification and consolidation. Numerous new states were formed in South America.

Along with the consolidation of all these states' boundaries, languages and local loyalties were also consolidated into state loyalties and different common dialects.
