(a) (b) When rays of light travel from a denser medium to a rarer medium, it bends away from the normal due to refraction of light and the actual depth appears to be raised. Real depth is the actual distance of an object beneath the surface, whereas apparent depth is the position at which the object appears to be. Its value is smaller than the real depth of the object because we look at the object from a medium of lower optical density. Therefore, the fish appears to be raised from its actual position in the water.
