The flower is the reproductive organ of the plant, because it contains the male and female part of the plant. The male part of the plant is known as stamen and the female part of the plant is known as carpel.

Stamen: It is the third whorl of the flower, that consists of anther and filament. The anther is present at the tip of the stamen and produces a powdery substance which contains the male sex cells.

Carpel : It is the fourth innermost whorl which consists of stigma, style and ovary. Stigma is the upper part of the plant which receives the pollen grains from anther and the style is present in between the stigma and ovary. The ovary is the basal part of the flower which contains the female sex cells. In the ovary, the male and female sex cells fuse to form a zygote. This process is known as fertilization. After the process of fertilization, the ovary develops to give fruit and seeds.

Self-pollination: When pollen grains transfer from the anther of the flower to the stigma of the same flower or to the stigma of another flower of the same plant is known as self-pollination.
Cross-pollination: When the pollen grains transfer from the anther of the flower to the stigma of the flower of another plant of the same type. In cross-pollination, pollen grains are transferred by different agencies such as wind, water, insects, etc.
