In $1885$ , the land of Maasais was divided between the British and the Germans. The Maasai community was pushed into a small area of Southern Kenya and Northern Tanzania, which reduced their grazing lands.

After the division, the British colonial rulers promoted cultivation on pasture lands, which restricted the movement of herders, due to which the Maasais lost their grazing areas.

The Maasais were forced to live in a dry area where there was a shortage of water and poor pasture, which made it difficult for them to graze their herds.

The British converted forests into game reserves like the Masai Mara, Serengeti National Park and Samburu National Park, which led to a fall in pasture lands.
