It prevents the backflow of mercury into the thermometer when it is removed from the patient's mouth. If we use a laboratory thermometer, the mercury level will fall immediately as soon as the thermometer is taken out of the patient's mouth which will give the wrong reading of the body temperature. Therefore, we have different types of thermometers to check our body temperature and to measure temperature in the laboratory.
