A glass prism produces a spectrum when white light passes through it but glass slab does not produce any spectrum. Explain why.

Accepted Answer

The refracting surfaces in case of a glass slab are parallel to each other so the incident ray and the emergent ray are parallel to each other. This causes the cancellation of the angle of deviation of light rays that happened at the first refracting surface by the second refracting surface. Thus, in a glass slab the angle of deviation is zero for the light rays, so no dispersion of light takes place. But in the case of a glass prism, the refracting surfaces are inclined to each other making an angle called the angle of prism. Thus, when light rays pass through a glass prism, different wavelengths of light deviate differently thereby causing dispersion of white light. From this we can conclude that, a spectrum is produced only by a glass prism when white light passes through it and not by a glass slab.
