A lever is a simple machine and lever of the first type has its pivot between the effort force and the load. See-saw is an example of the first type lever. An inclined plane is a sloping surface which acts like a simple machine whose mechanical advantage is always greater than one. The greater the slope, the larger will be the mechanical advantage. The sewing machine has a foot pedal, and it can be considered as an inclined plane. The bottle opener is the lever of the second type, where the load is between the effort and fulcrum. Here the force is magnified. This type of lever reduces the effort which has to be applied to do the work. A screw is a simple machine and it consist of a winding edge called a thread. The thread is really an inclined plane wrapped round the screw. The nut and bolt is also a kind of screw that holds objects together. The lever of third type have the effort between the load and fulcrum. Here the load is smaller than the effort, but distance is magnified and multiplies the speed. Ice-tong is an example of this type of lever. Any pair of tongs belongs to this type of lever. A wedge is a device that has two or more sloping surface either in the form of a sharp edge or pointed edge. They are used for splitting or for piercing materials. Nail is such a material which can be pierced through. Wheel and axle is a kind of continuous lever. It is made up of a wheel connected to a rod called axle. A pulley is also a type of wheel and axle with a chain attached. It helps to change the direction of motion to work with gravity.
