In a uniform circular motion, speed of the object is constant throughout the motion but the direction of the motion changes continuously. Hence the velocity is not constant causing an acceleration in the body. This is why uniform circular motion is an accelerated motion.

The magnitude of the acceleration is uniform but its direction is constantly changing in a uniform circular motion. Therefore, the acceleration is variable. This is called centripetal acceleration. For an object to change its direction of motion, a force is required. The force acting on a particle moving in a circular path is called centripetal force.

The direction of the centripetal force at any instant is perpendicular to the direction of motion and is directed towards the centre of the circular path. The direction of force and acceleration is the same at a given instant.
