Matter exists in three states namely solid, liquid and gas. Solids have a high intermolecular force of attraction. So, they have the least intermolecular space. Some solids can directly convert into the gaseous state without passing through the intermediate liquid state, this process is called sublimation. A process in which a solid melts to become a liquid on heating is called melting. It is a reversible change. Molecules in the matter are tightly held together by a strong force of attraction between them which is called intermolecular force. It is maximum in solids. Anything that has mass and occupies space is called as matter. Depending on the physical properties, matter is categorised into three states, solid, liquid and gas.
