Spectator ions are the ions present in the electrolyte that does not undergo any chemical change during electrolysis. The electrolyte here is an aqueous solution of nickel sulphate that means along with nickel sulphate water is also present. They both ionize as follows:

${NiSO}_{4} \to {Ni}^{2 +} + {SO}_{4}^{2 -}$

$H_{2} O \to H^{+} + {OH}^{-}$

Since nickel ions and hydrogen ions are the only cations present, where nickel ions take part in the reaction and get deposited on the cathode. Therefore, the hydrogen ions are the spectator cations present in the solution.
