Arrangement of the chromosomes Each chromosome splits and two daughter chromatids migrate towards the two opposite poles. The homologous chromosomes get separated and each chromosome goes to the opposite poles having half number of chromosomes.

Centromere The centromere of each chromosome gets divided. The centromere does not get divided. Hence, half set of the chromosomes migrates towards one pole.

Chromatid number Each chromosome consists of one chromatid in anaphase of mitosis, i.e., monad stage. Each chromosome at the pole in anaphase I has two chromatids,i.e., they are in dyad stage.

The key difference between mitosis and meiosis is that the homologous chromosomes separate, sister chromatids remain joined during anaphase-I in meiosis, whereas, in anaphase of mitosis they separate due to splitting of the centromere. Hence, in meiosis, the reduction of chromosome number occurs at the end of anaphase. The chromosomes become half. The actual reduction occurs at this stage. Hence, each daughter cell has half the number of chromosomes. Therefore, the daughter cells are haploid in nature.
