Arteries carry blood away from the heart. The walls of the arteries are thick and strong because strength and elasticity are needed to withstand the pulsing of the blood. They contain muscles and elastic tissues. They are relatively narrow. They can stretch and recoil.

Veins return blood to the heart. They are thin, containing far less muscle and elastic tissue than arteries. They are wide and contain valves.

Capillaries supply all cells with their requirements and take away waste products. They are very thin and narrow. They need not have strong walls as most of the blood pressure has been lost.

Xylem loses their end walls to forms a continuous, hollow tube. They become strengthened by a substance called lignin.

The phloem components such as Sieve tubes are specialised for transport and have no nuclei. Each sieve tube has a perforated end. The cytoplasm connects one cell to the next.
