A synapse is a junction or space between the neurons at which the neurotransmitters are released. It is between the terminal end fibres of the axon of one neuron and the dendrites of another neuron. It is a space where an impulse from terminal end fibres of one neuron is passed on to the dendrites of another neuron. At a synapse, there is no direct physical contact between the two neurons.

The neurons communicate or transmit electric impulse with one another at the junction is called synapse or neuronal junction. This communication is between two nerves or between a nerve and a gland or muscle. The chemical substance produces at the intersection of the axon, and dendrites of two neurons and helps in the transmission of impulse are called neurotransmitters.

Synapses are microscopic gaps that separate the terminal buttons of one neuron from receptors (usually, located on the dendrites) of another neuron. Synapse is defined as a junction or gap between the axon endings of one neuron and dendrites of another neuron. It allows the transfer of nerve impulses between neurons by the diffusion of neurotransmitters.
