Chipko movement started as the result of a small level effort to end the separation of people from their forests. The incident took place during the 1970s in a remote village called ‘Reni’ by the tribal people of Tehri-Garhwal district in Uttarakhand.

A logging contractor had been allowed to cut down the trees in a forest close to their village. But the people, realizing the importance of forests decided to stand against the ruthless butchery of nature and the axes of greedy contractors.

The women in the village reached the forests to prevent the workers from cutting down the trees by clasping the tree trunks with their arms.Thus, the forest trees were saved.

Thus, Chipko movement spread across all communities quickly and also taught people that the destruction of forests affected not just the availabilty of forest products, but also the quality of soil and sources of water.
