The Santhal revolt took place in the Bhognadih village of Santhal Parganas in Bengal. The Santhals were resented by the heavy demands of the landlords and moneylenders, and ill-treatment by the revenue officials and police. Santhals lost their bullocks, carts, and lands in order to pay the taxes.

In June $30, 1855$ , a massive rally was conducted by the Santhal tribe. This rally was led by two brothers, Sidhu and Kanu. They took an oath to end the oppressive rule of the British, Zamindars, and moneylenders and set up independent Santhal rule. At the rally, it was announced that the artisans, potters, cobblers and blacksmiths were the allies of Santhals.
