The following three events occur during the process of photosynthesis:
(i) Absorption of light energy by chlorophyll: Chlorophyll aids in this process by capturing solar energy. An electron in the chlorophyll molecule is excited from a lower to a higher energy state when chlorophyll receives energy from sunlight.
(ii) Conversion of light energy to chemical energy and splitting of water molecules into hydrogen and oxygen: The electrons that chlorophyll gave must be replaced, and these new electrons come from splitting water. Light energy and catalysts work together to divide water molecules into protons (H+), electrons, and oxygen gas in a process known as photolysis.

(iii) Reduction of carbon dioxide to carbohydrates: The dark reaction or light-independent processes convert carbon dioxide to carbohydrates and other substances. In the dark process, carbon dioxide is converted to carbohydrates with the help of ATP and NADPH produced in light-dependent reactions.
