Chromatography is the method used to separate the mixture of chemicals in their liquid or gaseous form. This method is based on the principle of selective absorption of components of a mixture.

In paper chromatography, special chromatographic paper and a solvent in which substances are dissolved are used. Here the chromatographic paper is kept stable and the solvent is the mobile phase.

The mixture of different substances is taken in a glass jar and the paper is then dipped in the solution such that it only touches the liquid. The apparatus is kept aside undisturbed. The solvents from the mixture start moving up the chromatographic paper by capillary action and start separating out on the paper.

The solute with the least affinity with the solvent get absorbed first in the paper and with high affinity gets absorbed last. These absorptions will create a pattern in the chromatography paper which is known as the chromatograph.
