On the call of Mahatma Gandhi, different social groups had joined the Non-Cooperation Movement. They had different expectations from the movement. Some groups which had participated in the movement are the middle class in towns, workers in plantations and peasants in countryside.

The movement started first in the towns and cities with the middle class joining in huge numbers. Students boycotted schools and colleges, teachers and principals resigned and lawyers stopped their practice. However, the momentum gradually slowed down as people could no longer afford Khadi clothes and there were no Indian alternatives to schools and colleges.

After town and cities, it gradually spread to the plantations and countryside. In the plantations in Assam, the workers left plantations without permission and went to their villages. They believed that land would be given to them in their villages. The peasants participated in Awadh to protest against the oppressive landlords and abolish begar.
