There are different types of blood vessels in the body. Based on their structure and function, blood vessels are classified as either arteries, capillaries, or veins. Arteries carry oxygen-rich blood from the heart to all parts of the body. Since the blood flow is rapid and at a high pressure, the arteries have thick elastic walls.

Blood rich in carbon dioxide is called deoxygenated blood. In the above-shown figure, the blood vessels F [superior and inferior vena cava] carry deoxygenated blood from all parts of the body reaches to the heart. The blood vessel G [pulmonary artery] then transports this blood to the lungs where oxygenation of the blood occurs.
