Roots play a major role in the absorption of water from the soil and the upper parts of the plant assist in the absorption through transpiration pull. The water that is absorbed by the root hair, is transported to various parts of the plant. The fluid that moves upward in the stem is a dilute solution of mineral ions and water absorbed from the soil. It is called sap.

The pressure created near the roots due to absorption and accumulation of water is called root pressure. It is positive hydrostatic pressure. It helps to push the water column in the xylem to small heights in stems.

Root pressure is not an important factor for upward movement in tall trees because:

It accounts for very less amount of water transportation and can not help in ascent of sap in tall trees. Therefore, it is absent in conifers.

Exudation of sap from cut tip of stem is due to root pressure.
