The developmental stage of an animal embryo is called embryogenesis or animal embryonic development. It begins with the fertilisation of an egg cell (ovum) by a sperm cell. The zygote (fertilised ovum) undergoes mitosis with no significant growth and cellular differentiation, leading to the development of a multicellular embryo. This embryo then undergoes the different stages to develop into a well-developed foetus.
