Conduction is the process of transfer of heat in a body from the hotter end to the colder end without any actual movement of the molecules of the material. This is the primary mode of heat transfer in solid state of matter.

For example,

1. The heat from the burner is transferred from one end, along the rod to the other end.

2. When the stove is turned on, the frying-pan becomes very hot.

The method by which heat is transferred in liquids or gases is called convection. In other words, the process of transfer of heat in a liquid or a gas by the actual movement of the particles of the liquid or gas is called convection.

For example,

1. Heat transfer in air and water.

2. Heating the water at the bottom of pot. Then, this hot water rises and cooler water moves down to replace it, causing a circular motion.

The heat energy transferred without the need of any medium is called radiant heat. Radiation is the process of transfer of heat from a hot body to a cold body without any medium. Radiation needs no medium.

For example,

1. Heat energy from the sun reaches the earth.

2. Heating of a room by an open-hearth fireplace.
