Simple machines can be grouped into the following six types.

2. Wheel and axle: The wheel and axle is a machine in which a wheel attached to a smaller axle so that these two parts rotate together. This machine is used to push heavy loads on wheels rather than carrying.

3. Pulley: A pulley is a small fixed wheel or a group of such wheels with a rope or chain in a grooved rim. It can be used to lift heavy weights. It can also be used to change the direction of the force.

4. Inclined plane: An inclined plane is a flat supporting surface with one end higher than the other. It is used for raising or lowering a load which are too heavy.

5. Screw: A screw is simply an inclined plane around a cylinder. The surface of the screw is made up of spiral grooves. A screwdriver is used to drive a screw into wood.

6. Wedge: A wedge is a double inclined plane the shape of "V". These are used to separate things. An axe and a knife are examples of a wedge.
