According to the electronic theory of valence, every atom tries to attain the octet configuration i.e. presence of eight electrons in its valence shell by losing, gaining or sharing electrons. This is known as the octet rule.

For example, the formation of ${CO}_{2}$ takes place when one carbon atom bonds with two oxygen atoms. Carbon has four electrons in its valence shell and needs four more electrons to reach the octet state. Oxygen has six outer electrons and needs two. Carbon shares two of its valence electrons with one oxygen and the other two valence electrons with the second oxygen. In turn, each oxygen shares two of its electrons with the carbon. Each shared electron helps to fill the valence shells of two atoms to complete their octet.
