A food chain represents the organisms in a sequence in which they are consumed by the next consumer. All the living organisms feed either on plants or on animals, but there are a few that feed on the dead plants, animals or carrion. Scavengers are consumers that eat dead animals and the leftover of the carnivores. Hyenas and vultures are scavengers.

The place where an organism live is called its habitat. An ecosystem is a community of organisms in a given habitat interacting with each other and with their non-living environment. It is an open system that requires a regular input of energy. Biotic and abiotic are the two components of an ecosystem. The biotic components consist of producers such as green plants, consumers such as animals, and decomposers such as microbes.
