When phenol is refluxed with chloroform and aqueous sodium hydroxide at 340 K followed by hydrolysis, an aldehyde group gets introduced into the aromatic ring at the ortho position. This reaction is called Reimer-Tiemann reaction.

What are benzylic alcohol?

The alcohols in which the — OH group is attached to a sp 3 - hybridised carbon atom next to an aromatic ring is called benzylic alcohol. These are further classified into primary, secondary and tertiary benzylic alcohols based on the number of carbon group attached to the carbon having hydroxyl group.

How can primary, secondary alcohols be distinguished by Lucas test?

Lucas reagent is a mixture of concentrated hydrochloric acid and anhydrous zinc chloride 1 : 1 . Alcohols when reacted with Lucas reagent form corresponding haloalkane. Haloalkane being insoluble form turbidity in the solution. Primary and secondary alcohols can be differentiated based on turbidity formation. Primary alcohols does not form turbidity at room temperature whereas, secondary alcohols forms turbidity within five minutes.

It is alcohol compound with the IUPAC name 2 , 3 - dimethylbutanol. While naming the alcohol compound, choose the longest carbon chain containing hydroxyl group and identify the parent carbon. Replace 'e' of parent carbon by the suffix 'ol'.

Why are phenols more acidic than alcohols? What happens when phenol is treated with excess of aqueous bromine solution?

Phenols more acidic than alcohols because of the following reasons. i) In phenol, the benzene ring is electron withdrawing. Therefore, electrons are withdrawn towards itself. This increases the polarity of the O - H bond of phenol. ii) Due to resonance, the oxygen atom of the hydroxyl group of phenol acquires a positive charge. This makes the release of H as H + easier. But in alcohol, hydrogen atom of hydroxyl group is firmly attached. Hence, it can not be ionised. Phenol when treated with excess of aqueous bromine solution yields 2,4,6-tribromophenol and the process is called bromination. It is an electrophilic substitution reaction.
