Alauddin Khalji was one of the most important Khalji rulers.

He tried to systematise land revenue and urban taxes. Alauddin increased the kharaj tax to fifty percent of the produce. Revenue collection was so strict that often peasants had to sell their standing crops to meet tax demands, according to chronicler Barani.

Alauddin had to maintain a large standing army to prevent the Sultanate from Mongol attacks. It was a huge administrative and economic challenge for him. He preferred to give the soldiers salary in cash. Alauddin introduced market control measures. In this he fixed prices of all kinds of commodities, appointed barids (intelligence officers) and shahna-i-mandi (a controller of market).
